Next Club Run – May 12th

Cactus Run – May 12th.
Next month’s run is being organized by Richard and Jean Joss with the help of a route put together by Bob Livermore. It will be a relatively short run taking in a visit to the amazing Cactus Gardens near Casarabonela. If you haven’t been there before it is well worth a visit to see one of the finest collections of cactii and other succulents in Europe with over 2,500 species on show. We’ll be meeting at Sol y Sombre (Hoya 19 as was) at 10 am for a 1030 start – slightly earlier than usual to give us more time at the Gardens. The run to the gardens will be about an hour where we will have coffee and tapas, followed by a guided tour of the gardens by the manageress who speaks perfect English. Cost of the visit will be 4Euros, or 3Euros if we have 20+ visitors.

Much of the collection is under cover so we won’t be too adversely affected by the weather. Her brother is also a classic car fanatic and has restored several cars – he will be coming in one of them. After the visit we will be heading off for lunch at a venue still to be finalised – more details later.

Now, the important bit. Parking is a bit limited and 15 cars is about the maximum we can accommodate. So entry will be on a first come, first served, basis. You will need to pre-book to be sure of a place. Contact Richard and Jean direct as soon as you can:

Vejer run with Merc. Club

Nick (Wadham Sutton) has received an invitation from Paco Guirola, of the Cádiz Mercedes Benz club to join them for a run to Vejer de la Frontera on the 30th. of June. This is organised by the Ayuntamiento and includes a tour of Vejer, official reception with sherry and a guided walking tour of the historic quarter.

The event starts at 12.00 h. and winds up at 14.30 h., when participants are free to wander and find something to eat. Nick and Elo will be going and if any of our members would like to travel in convoy we will meet up at Laguna Village at 09.30 on the Saturday the 30th June

Alternatively members could make their own way to Vejer town centre where there will be signs/police to guide them. Members of the Campo de Gibraltar club will also be there so a good turnout is forecast.

Mijas Car Show and Parade

We have been approached by the Mijas Ajuntamiento to inquire if we would display some of our Classic Cars as part of the upcoming Mijas Festival scheduled for the 9th June 2012. The cars will be parked outside the Town Hall and will be asked to join the opening parade through the town returning to their allocated parking spot.

There is only room for ten cars, therefore priority will be given to our Club’s classification of a Classic Car, namely a car that is fifteen years old having been in production for twenty five years. Cars will need to display a brief history in their windows while parked.

We have to reply by Monday the 30th of April in order that Mijas can make the appropriate arrangements.

Just a reminder that Club Night is next Wednesday, 7.30 for 8pm at Sol y Sombra. The next outing will be a short run and BBQ in a park somewhere next Saturday 14th April. There will also be a Technical meeting on Wednesday 25th April if a presenter can be found.

An elderly gentleman has asked the Club to dispose of his tools as he can no longer manage to keep his Classic. In fact the car has now returned to England. Here are some photos and an idea of an approximate amount he is asking for them. Anyone interested please email Carol or myself.

Photo (1) Both of the vernier calipers are Mitutoyo; the larger one I am informed cost £120 or so when purchased.The cordless drill/screwdriver is a one speed 12v machine with its charger10€. The vertical clock gauge is an unknown quantity.5€?
Bench Grinder. 15€?

Photo (2) There are approx 100 Allen Keys, from very small to very large; they are a ‘mixed bunch’ some metric some imperial. There are 18 reamers, a small socket/screwdriver set, wire strippers,a staple ‘gun’, A de-burring kit with some spare blades for the ‘flexi’ type & an 16 inch Stilson . Again……………?€

Photo (3) is the lathe. As I intimated over the telephone, Sonia’s son wants to have it but it would be very expensive to pack securely & transport. Anyway it’s of ‘sentimental value’ to him since he is in no way an engineer! If anyone is interested in it we would put it to him & see how it goes from there. I guess it’s probably worth around 200€

Photos (4), the Pillar drill.a ‘guesstimate’ here would be about 25€.

Photos (5) , the hand tools; are a mixed bunch Metric; Imperial; A/F etc. The small set does include some B.A. sizes.Another guess price-wise would be around 25€

Road Books via Google Earth

Well done to Ian (Couch) for putting together the March Road book while sailing on a drill ship out in the far East. Wonders of modern technology. Thank you to Ian and all his local helpers for dedication to duty. Once you start using Google Earth, it can be very addictive. I used the system to produce the Valentine Almond Blossom run last month but being an untrusting sort of person I then went round to check. I must say Google Earth was right.
So, everyone out there , give it a go, you can sit behind a computer and produce Road books for the Club.
Here are some picture of the Drill Ship, see if you can spot Ian.

2012 Programme Update

There are still some events to be confirmed especially Technical Meetings – so if you think you could organise one let the committee know. Also, even if you have a topic you would like to be covered but can’t do it yourself – do the same.
