From the Committee September 2016

From the Committee September 2016

.

We hope everyone has had a pleasant summer. Most of us find ourselves with family down on holidays enjoying the Spanish sunshine. Although this year August has been very hot, in fact too hot with temperatures approaching 40 degrees C. The pool was out of bounds for the grandchildren until the cooler evening.

Visitors are very welcome, especially the small variety who appear to have boundless energy.

All is back to normal now as the Costa del Sol waves goodbye to its visitors and SOL Classic Car Club members check out their classics with the usual routine of topping up oils and other fluids, plus the dusting and polishing in preparation for another year of outings.

At the September Club dinner a discussion took place regarding the venues and times of our monthly dinner. Your Committee has listened to the suggestions made so we hope that these reflect what you have said. Therefore the ‘October dinner’ will now be a lunch. Arrangements have been made to have a three course, 20eu lunch at Jinete’s – a Venta near La Cala Golf.

Meet up at 1.30pm for lunch at 2pm

A daytime run in your Classic to this location will be an uplifting experience. Your Committee has already sampled the cuisine and can report that the menu should cater for all tastes. The Venue is located away from the coast a few kilometres inland from Cala de Mijas. It is signposted and if you click on this link all will be revealed.

We hope this change is supported by members as the location has good parking facilities and a very pleasant outlook. At the October Lunch we will discuss what type of short runs members are interested in. and formalise a run for the November lunchtime run and meet. .

  1. September weekend Hotel Cuevas la Granja

  1. A well thought out and a well organised weekend by John and Marion. The locations were off our usual patch and a very welcome change appreciated by all. The accommodation was different to say the least but very comfortable. The caves stay cool in the summer and we are told are very warm in the winter

  1. Some members were heard to recount that they had gone out on a stroll in the countryside behind the hotel caves to suddenly find themselves bumping into TV aerials and chimney stacks. It is only then that they realised that they were walking on top of someone’s cave house.

  1. The runs organised by John and Marion held their own excitement particularly sections of the road that could only support one car with a steep drops on both sides. A few hairy moments did occur when oncoming traffic had to stop and back up to let us pass. We climbed to 2000 metres and visited the Granada ski resorts, fairly deserted at this time of year.

  1. Some of the villages we passed had never come across our Classics and some members were seen to stop and have pictures taken by locals. The runs John and Marion had chosen did present challenges to our larger cars but all was well throughout the weekend. John has already pencilled in plans for next year and given the large turnout by our Club that too should be very successful.

Looking Ahead

October Run on the 15th Los Almendros & Ronda

Is being organised by Ian Couch, Phoung, Pat & Roley Coleman and will take us to the Ronda area. We are always surprised that Ian and his team manage to find new roads and interesting places in locations we thought we had been to in the past. More information will be sent out as it becomes available, so please keep an eye on your emails.

  1. Looking even further ahead

Club Christmas Party – Wednesday 14th December 2016

We know December is a long away off but some organisation of activities have to be carried out well in advance. Your Committee have negotiated to hold our Christmas party at the Valparaiso Mijas. There will be music and dancing and entertainment including our own Barry. The Valparaiso has undergone refurbishment and we thought we would give the establishment another try. The Menu and more details will follow nearer the day. Meanwhile here is the location map. Ray is organising overnight accommodation at a nearby hotel.
